Right now the world is focused on finding a vaccine for Covid-19 and each one of us doing what we can to reduce our risk of contracting this virus. Now more than ever adopting a more holistic lifestyle has significant benefits. This pandemic has worsened our stress levels, and unfortunately putting many at risk of diseases such as Obesity, Hypertension, Diabetes, and Heart Disease to list but a few.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the U.S, nearly 50% of the adult population is obese. The American Heart Association reports that are nearly around 103 million adults in the U.S have hypertension, and this is nearly half of all adult population in America.

The Uk fairs only slightly better with 28% of its population according to the Health Survey for England being obese. This was before Covid-19 and the massive strain to health care systems has meant the postponing of yearly health checks and screening. With the additional pressures and restricted living we now face; prevention has become perhaps the most important ammunition we have.

What Is A Holistic Lifestyle?

A Holistic Lifestyle approach is one that focuses on preventive methods by fostering a balance between your mind, body, and spirit. By opting for natural remedies, organic foods, and mindful living. A Holistic Lifestyle not only has the benefit of potentially preventing the occurrence of certain conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes but also allows us the opportunity to reconnect with the earth and our souls.

Living a Holistic Lifestyle requires proactivity but there are easy simple steps you can start with. 

  • Start by finding out if any conditions run in your family.
  • Take a personal inventory of your physical, mental, and spiritual health.
  • Look at your diet, is it a balanced one? I recommend low carb, moderate protein, and healthy fats like nuts and avocado. Take into account your physical health goals; if you are currently trying to lose weight then your output needs to exceed your intake. Apps like myfitnesspal can help track your intake and monitor your progress. Observe what works for your body and general wellbeing. 
  •  How are you nourishing your mind? Meditation, music, reading are some of the ways to nourish your mind and soul.

10 Ways to Embrace A More Holistic Lifestyle

  1. Eat a healthy and balanced diet. Limit refined and processed food and when possible go for an organic option.
  2. Do some form of physical exercise daily. Dancing in your room which is my favourite counts!
  3. Try to get at least 8 hours of good quality sleep. Reduce distractions before bed and try to keep good sleep routines like going to bed and waking at the same time each day.
  4. Look for natural medicinal alternatives. I suffer from migraines and find Feverfew, a herbal tablet works wonders. Before taking herbal tablets do your research and buy from reputable companies. If you are currently on any medication check with your doctor before starting them that they will not interact with your current medications.
  5. Build and cultivate a positive healthy support network of family and friends
  6. Make out time for you. Take yourself to the spa for instance and if this isn’t possible go for a walk or write in your journal.
  7. Talk to God and meditate. Let any tension or worries pass through you without judgment.
  8. Pursue your purpose wholeheartedly. Right now life is difficult, uncertain and maybe you’ve lost loved ones. Remember you still have so much to give and your happiness lies within loving yourself firstly, so you owe to you and your creator to share your gifts with the world
  9. Reduce stress and negativity. If it’s causing chaos in your mind or your soul is restless then it’s likely you need to remove yourself from this situation or person. If it’s your job trust the universe and start looking for another job or start a side hustle. 
  10. Invest in your self-development. This could be in the form of watching Youtube videos, reading books, or go a step further and attend webinars or consider getting a Life Coach or Mentor depending on your goals.

When I tell my patients and clients about what living holistically means often they are surprised that it’s more than just eating organic foods. But the ease of where to start and the benefits motivate them to take control of their health. 

So take small steps each day, week month, and live in a way that fits into your values.
