Have you ever stopped yourself to ask this question: “Can positive attitude improve my life?”

Absolutely! Positive attitude can make a difference in your life. Most times, being pessimistic can get things done for you, motivate you and encourage people around you too. There’s also something very normal–being negative from time to time.

Sometimes, no matter how much we want to be upbeat and happy, it just doesn’t happen. It’s not that we don’t know how to be happy. It’s that life doesn’t always cooperate.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t find moments of happiness by cultivating a positive attitude.

Before I share the things that are hindering your positive thinking, I’ll like to explain what a positive attitude means.

What is a positive attitude?

If you have a positive attitude, you have a more positive outlook on life. You believe that life is generally good and that things will get better with time.

Now that we have that out of the way, here are 10 things that might hinder you  from maintaining a positive attitude:

1. Lack of sleep:

A lack of sleep can drain your energy and make it hard to maintain a positive attitude throughout the day.

It’s totally understandable that we can’t keep getting long hours of sleep; you might be a new mother or a student reading for exams, but you should also know that if you don’t find a way to get the required sleep, it will tell on you.

2. Eating unhealthy:

An unhealthy diet can negatively affect your self-esteem, making it difficult to maintain a positive attitude. Consider this: do you believe someone suffering from body dysmorphia can be positive? No, not possible. So, it’s time to reduce your processed meal intake and start going for something organic. Your body will thank you, your brain will function right and your mind will be at peace.

3.  Too Busy:

Being always busy might look like you have something “going for you” to outsiders, but deep down you know you’re hurting. A busy schedule is bad for you emotionally and physically. It can also make it difficult to maintain good relationships. Being overly busy may cause you to neglect your health in favor of completing your duties. Instead of making deliberate choices, you may make snap judgments about your day-to-day physical health. Not prioritizing physical activity or obtaining the amount of sleep your body needs might be examples of this. It’s possible you’ll put off seeing a doctor if you ignore or push aside any physical health problems you have. Over time, when you keep burying yourself in your work, you start having negative thoughts because you’re neglecting yourself.

4. Poor health:

Poor health often undermines a positive attitude, making it hard to stay optimistic. Your emotions and feelings have the power to influence your physical health. The more openly we experience and express our emotions, the less likely they are to negatively influence our health. Repressed emotions, on the other hand, can sap mental energy, have harmful effects on the body, and even result in health problems. Harmful emotions that aren’t well-managed might have negative effects on your health.

Chronic stress may be caused by negative attitudes and emotions of helplessness and hopelessness, which can disrupt hormone balance, deplete happy brain chemicals, and harm the immune system. Stress may shorten our lives if left untreated and I know we can’t always control our health, but please take a break from time to time. Go for a check-up and listen to your body!

5. Stress:

Positivity does not imply ignoring life’s challenges. Positive thinking is merely a new way of looking at things. “No worries, you’re hoping for the best.” So, if you’re stressed out at work, in a relationship, or even financially, take it easy and be patient. These problems may hinder optimistic thinking.

So start by saying your affirmations every morning and before going to bed. Positive self-talk is a typical place to start. As you go about your day, your mind is constantly bombarded with thoughts. Uncontrollable thoughts might be beneficial or unpleasant. Your self-talk includes logic and reason. Misconceptions caused by ignorance can lead to negative self-talk.

6. Emotional baggage:

Anger, bitterness, regret, and beating yourself up make up emotional baggage.   Giving someone else control of your emotions is a bad idea, especially if you’ve been wronged. All of these things impede your ability to think positively and live your ideal life. Do you desire a happy life and believe that holding on to your rage and resentment against other people or previous events would help you achieve that goal? It’s a long way off. Forgiveness is a choice you make for yourself, not for someone else. It allows you to better manage your feelings and, as a result, your overall well-being. Let it go now.

7. Lack of self-confidence:

Imagine waking up every day with the thought that you’re not good enough for that job or that person because you’re not beautiful enough. Just having those thoughts might have a negative impact on your mental health. Not only does it make you smaller, but it also poisons your intellect, making it difficult for you to think clearly.

8. Negative people:

Working in an environment that you despise may have a massive effect on your thinking. It’s possible to shift from being a cheerful individual to a pessimistic one without even realizing it. Many people are stuck in professions they despise despite the fact that they are highly compensated, while others are stuck in occupations that aren’t even well compensated. Working in a location that saps your happiness, regardless of how much money you make, isn’t the perfect fit for you. Having a negative outlook is hampered if you’re stuck in a bad situation all the time.

9. Unsupportive family members:

Mental health, behavior, and even overall wellbeing may be significantly influenced by family ties. Recent studies have reported that long-term and short-term effects on mental wellbeing may be found in interactions, particularly familial connections. Mental health can be improved or impaired depending on the type of the relationship. So, if you have family members who are rarely there for you when you need them the most, your ability to think positively may be impacted.

10. Cluttered environments

Clutter might get in the way of your efforts to build a good mindset. It’s easy to lose sight of your life’s purpose when your environment is messy, and clutter clogs your thoughts. Clutter might get in the way of your desire to reach and keep a consistent, positive thinking mind. If your garage, bedroom, or closet is a mess, then it’s time to declutter it. I promise it’ll help!

How you think and feel about your situation can have a strong influence on your ability to keep a positive attitude.
